ChatGPT Dropped Reddit Citations. Is That an Opportunity for You?

For two years, “go be helpful on Reddit” was the advice. In one week of August 2026, that stopped working — and the space it left went somewhere very interesting for small businesses.

What actually happened

Reddit spent two years as one of the most-cited websites in ChatGPT. Then, in about a week, it nearly disappeared.

The most-quoted numbers — measured by Promptwatch, reported by Forbes, Axios and Search Engine Land — show Reddit holding a steady 3.83% share of ChatGPT Search citations from July 18 through August 7, 2026, then dropping to an average of 0.52% between August 14 and 17. That’s an 86.4% relative decline, and Reddit stayed down after it.

Independent datasets saw the same shape at different sizes. One measured a 95% collapse over a single week. Another, reviewing 16 brand reports across unrelated industries, found Reddit citations down at least 73%.

Two details matter more than the exact percentage:

It was one engine. Reddit’s share of Google AI Overviews citations moved only slightly over the same period — from roughly 2.37% to 2.10%. No cliff. Whatever changed, changed inside ChatGPT.

ChatGPT didn’t get quieter. In that 16-report analysis, ChatGPT’s total citation volume actually went up about 3.5% during the drop. The slots didn’t disappear. They got handed to somebody else.

Why it happened (nobody’s totally sure)

There are three explanations in circulation, and OpenAI hasn’t confirmed any of them.

  • A change in how ChatGPT searches. On August 8, ChatGPT sharply increased its use of site: queries — going directly to specific domains instead of casting a wide net across the open web. Promptwatch logged site:-scoped fanouts jumping from 0.37% to 16.8% in a single day. Not every analyst sees it: at least one firm reports no such rise in its own fanout data.
  • The GPT-5.6 rollout, which landed in the same window.
  • Reddit blocking crawlers. One report on August 20 claimed Reddit had blanket-blocked its domain in robots.txt. This one is contested — other analysts point out ChatGPT still reads plenty of Reddit, it just stopped linking it.

For your purposes, the cause matters less than the direction. And the direction is clear.

Where the citations went — this is the part for you

This is the whole story for a small business owner.

The breakdown of what moved into Reddit’s place, from that 16-report analysis: official brand and competitor pages rose in 10 of 15 reports. Other commercial websites rose in 9 of 15. Encyclopedia and reference sources rose in 4 of 5. News and media fell in 11 of 12 reports. Review directories — G2, Capterra, Trustpilot — fell alongside Reddit.

Another analysis found the single biggest winner was a category almost nobody in marketing owns: help centers and product documentation.

Read that list again. ChatGPT traded chatter for first-party sources — the company’s own pages, saying what the company actually does.

For a plumber, a dentist, a bakery, or a two-person software business, that’s not a threat. That’s the door opening. The type of source that gained share is the type you control completely: your own website, answering real questions in plain language.

The honest caveats

Three things before you rebuild anything.

This may not last. A comparable collapse happened in September 2025, and Reddit recovered within months. Almost nobody mentioned that in the August coverage.

The datasets don’t agree. One measured Reddit’s pre-drop baseline at 3.83%; another had it at 16.7%. When the starting number is four times apart depending on who you ask, treat the percentages as a signal to watch, not gospel.

One engine is not the whole market. Reddit is still cited in Perplexity. Google’s AI surfaces moved far less, and for most local businesses those sit on top of the searches that already drive revenue.

Which is exactly why the takeaway isn’t “abandon Reddit.” It’s “don’t let a platform you don’t own be the only place an AI can learn about you.”

What to actually do this month

None of this requires becoming a marketer. It’s four things.

  1. Check whether AI can read your site at all. Most FAQ and content widgets render their answers with JavaScript, and AI crawlers generally don’t run JavaScript. Your answers can look perfect to a visitor and be completely invisible to ChatGPT. Also check that your robots.txt actually lets the crawlers in — GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended.
  2. Write down the questions customers really ask. “Do you do same-day?” “What does it cost?” “Do you cover my town?” Those are the questions people type into an AI. If a Reddit thread used to answer them for you, that answer just went missing.
  3. Answer each one on your own domain — specifically. “We’re committed to quality” is unquotable. “Licensed techs, same-day AC repair in Tampa, no after-hours surcharge” is a sentence an AI can lift straight into an answer. Lead with the answer in the first sentence, then the detail.
  4. Check back. Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini the questions a real customer would ask and see whose names come back. August proved these answers move fast. A one-time cleanup won’t tell you when they move again.

And keep doing your SEO. A healthy, fast, well-structured site is still the foundation — AEO is the next floor up, not a replacement. The same crawlable, well-organized page serves both.

Where FaqFlo comes in

FaqFlo does those four things for you.

We check whether AI can actually see your site, find the questions people are really asking AI about businesses like yours, write answers built to be quoted, and give you clean crawlable HTML you paste onto your own website — so the citation and the click come to you, not to a forum thread or a directory. Then we track whether you’re starting to show up in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini over time.

The citation slots that used to go to Reddit are being handed to businesses that publish clear answers on their own site. That’s a thing you can be.

Start with the free check. About a minute tells you whether AI can read your site today.

Frequently asked questions

Did ChatGPT really stop citing Reddit?

Mostly, and quite suddenly. Citation-tracking data from Promptwatch, reported by Forbes, Axios and Search Engine Land, showed Reddit’s share of ChatGPT Search citations falling from about 3.83% in late July and early August 2026 to about 0.52% by mid-August — an 86% relative drop — and independent datasets recorded the same shape at sizes between 73% and 95%. OpenAI has not publicly explained the change.

Does this mean Reddit is useless for marketing now?

No. The drop was specific to ChatGPT — Perplexity kept citing Reddit, and Reddit’s share in Google’s AI surfaces moved far less — and a comparable collapse in September 2025 reversed within months. The lesson isn’t to quit Reddit; it’s to stop relying on a platform you don’t own as your only path into AI answers.

Who got the citations Reddit lost?

Mostly first-party and canonical sources. Across the reports analysts published, official brand pages, other commercial websites, help centers, product documentation and reference sources all gained share, while forums, review directories and news outlets lost it.

Is this an opportunity for a small business?

Yes, if your own website can be read by AI crawlers. ChatGPT shifted toward pulling information directly from businesses’ own domains, which means clear, factual answers on your site are worth more now than they were in July. The catch is that many small business sites hide their answers behind JavaScript widgets, so the engines never see them.

What should I do first?

Find out whether AI can read your website today — whether your content exists as plain crawlable HTML and whether your robots.txt allows the AI crawlers in. That takes minutes to check and is the one thing that has to be true before anything else about AI visibility matters.

👋 Hi, I’m Beau. I’ve spent almost 20 years in marketing — long enough to watch the whole game change more than once. I was there when SEO was the answer, then social, then content, and now the biggest shift yet: people asking AI instead of Googling. Somewhere along the way I got tired of watching good small businesses do everything “right” and still stay invisible to the tools that increasingly decide who gets found. That’s why I built FaqFlo — my mission is to help you grow your business in the modern world of AI, so you become the answer, not just another link nobody clicks.
